14 Things to Cook, Bake, Stir, Shake and Master in 2014!

by Kelli on January 3, 2014

Happy New Year, friends!!  I hope 2014 is off to a really great start for you!

First thing Monday morning I’ve got a brand new recipe coming your way, but for now let’s talk New Years resolutions.  Do you make them?  And more importantly, if you do, do you keep them?

If your resolution is to cut out the dessert this year, I say whaaaaaa?  Instead of cutting out dessert, how about trying my favorite guilt-free desserts, instead!

Guilt-Free Desserts   * Tropical Chia Pudding
* Mango Ginger Yogurt Popsicles
* Vanilla Sugar Broiled Grapefruit
* Baked Apples

If your resolution is to eat healthier in 2014, here are my 4 favorite healthy meals to keep you on track:

Healthy Meal for 2014   * Vegan Quinoa Stuffed Peppers
   * Lemon & Herb Poached Halibut
   * Chickpea & Tofu Stir Fry
   * Freekeh Soup with Sweet Potato & Kale

I’m trying something new this year, instead of resolutions or goals, I have a list of 14 things I want to cook & bake in 2014!

This was actually kind of a difficult list to put together.  Although at first it was a piece of cake.  I scribbled down ten things in less than sixty seconds.  But then I was stumped.  I wanted this list to be well thought out, diverse and this might sound odd, but meaningful.  I put it out of my mind for a few days, and when I came back to it, instead of having a hard time thinking up 14 things, I had a really hard time narrowing the list down to 14 things!

14 Things I Plan to Cook, Bake, Stir, Shake and Master in 2014:

(1) Layer Cakes…I’ve made a layer cake before.  (a) I can’t tell you when that last happened, (b) it was probably hideous and (c) come to think of it, I don’t even know if I own cake pans.  I’d like to change this and make a beautiful layer cake.

(2) Bread…I’m not talking about quick bread, there’s plenty of that around here.  I’m talking about working with yeast, and making fluffy sandwich bread and whole grain breads.

(3) Homemade Pasta…this wasn’t initially on the list.  But, after having the most amazing and delicate raviolis at a restaurant in my neighborhood recently, I realized that I need more homemade pasta in my weekly dinner line up.

(4) Cocktails…you may have noticed, there’s not much in the cocktail department in these parts.  I don’t know much about making cocktails, and I’m not a huge drinker, but I do know that I love a good cocktail once in a while.  I want to learn about making a good cocktail and have one or two go-to drinks at the ready.

(5) Gluten Free Baking…I stuck my pinky toe in the waters of gluten free baking last year.  This year I want to jump off the high dive!

(6) Dumplings…I ate soup dumplings for the first time ever this past summer.  Let’s just say it changed my life.

(7) Pretzels…these have been on my mind for waaaay too long!  And since they’re on the list, I guess it means it’s finally going to happen.

(8) Pickles…have I ever told you guys about my serious love for pickles?  Love them!

(9) Marshmallows…these have been on my culinary bucket list for a long time

(10) Macarons…aka a lesson in patience….with one of the best rewards ever!

(11) Juicing at Home…apparently I was pretty good last year because Santa brought me a juicer!  Weeee!  Pretty sure I bought more produce in the past week than I did in all of 2013.  I’ve been making some really delicious concoctions and I can’t wait to share them with you, as well as some helpful tips and hints on juicing at home.

(12) Indian Food…I love eating Indian food, but I don’t know the first thing about cooking it.  I’m really excited to learn (and share, of course) a few good Indian dishes.

(13) Cinnamon Rolls…three words – sweet breakfast perfection!

(14) Pizza…I’d like to start making more homemade pizzas with homemade pizza dough.

Loved reading this! I love resolutions–mostly when they have to do with cooking ;) And several of yours are also on my list, including layer cakes (done a few, but that’s it), dumplings, macarons (scared), and a lot more homemade pasta.

Can’t wait for you to share them!

Thanks, Laura! I think I most scared about the layer cakes, but worst case scenario if they turn out terrible it can make for a funny post for the end of 2014 :)

I love this list! I’m hoping to do more GF baking and pickles myself (and maybe canning? Eep!). Thanks for the inspiration!

Love your list! I’m going to try to make more cocktails and try indian food this year, too! I’ve made macarons many many times but have never blogged about them so I hope that I can do that soon.

Thanks, Ashley! I’ve made macarons once before (but never blogged about it), although it’s been a while. Can’t wait to try again!
